FULL STORY:
In the Manhattan federal court filing, JPMorgan stated that the US Virgin Islands government itself, even after JPMC ended its relationship with Epstein, was the primary entity that failed to protect public safety and actively facilitated his criminal activities.
The bank accused the government of assisting Epstein instead of stopping him, pointing to the provision of millions of dollars in tax incentives and other benefits. This argument arises as JPMorgan faces a civil lawsuit from the Virgin Islands, which claims that the bank knowingly aided Epstein's sex trafficking and reaped benefits during his years as a customer.
The Virgin Islands' attorney general's office countered, stating that JPMorgan Chase facilitated Epstein's abuse and should be held accountable. The bank's recent court filing sought to reject the Virgin Islands' motion that would limit certain defenses in the lawsuit, with JPMorgan claiming that the motion was intended to conceal the territory's connection with Epstein.
Additionally, the filing noted Epstein's close ties to three previous governors of the Virgin Islands. Governor Albert Bryan Jr. is scheduled for deposition in the case, while JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon's deposition is set for Friday.
Judge Jed Rakoff authorized the Virgin Islands to subpoena Elon Musk and Tesla for any documents related to communications involving Musk, Epstein, and JPMorgan, based on the suspicion that Epstein may have referred or attempted to refer Musk as a client to the bank.
